Mtandao – Africa Social Work and Development Network (ASWDNet)
ASWDNet is a free, open, pan-African network established in 2020 to create, aggregate, and disseminate knowledge and resources that facilitate social work and development practice, education, and research across the African continent and its diaspora.
Mission and focus
The network is grounded in African knowledges, values, languages, and philosophies, with Ubuntu at its centre. It challenges the dominance of Western frameworks in African social work and development by building and promoting knowledge that reflects African realities, histories, and ways of knowing.
What it does
It publishes four open access journals covering social work, development administration, non-communicable conditions and disability, and Ubuntu studies. It maintains a large digital library, a dictionary and encyclopaedia of African social work and development (Fundi), a decolonisation calculator, African theory resources, and an independent ethics committee. It runs mentoring programmes (Kuumba), continuous professional development (Mfundo), student conferences, awards, and a range of training and learning resources. It also maintains an Ubuntu digital platform on Ushahidi for community engagement and data collection.
Membership and reach
Membership is free and open to social workers, development workers, academics, students, researchers, practitioners, and community members across Africa and the diaspora. The network’s website is used in every country of the world, with over 78,000 annual views, and its reach spans Africa, North America, Australia, and beyond.
Publisher
ASWDNet is the publisher of the Journal of Social Issues in Non-Communicable Conditions and Disability (SINCCD) and three other journals, all of which are fully open access and free to submit and read.
Values
The network is committed to decolonising social work knowledge, centering African languages and indigenous knowledge systems, and building a knowledge base that serves African communities on their own terms.
